Privacy policy

Book Please is an app for keeping track of the books you read, reading EPUB books and listening to audiobooks. It is made by Hekman Technology Consulting LLC (“we”). This policy explains what information the app uses, where it is kept and how you can delete it. In short: your library lives in your own Google Drive and on your devices, not on our servers, and we don’t sell your information or show ads.
Your Google account
You sign in with Google. We receive your name, email address, profile picture and Google account ID, and we use them only to sign you in and to show who is signed in. You also allow Book Please to use its own hidden folder in your Google Drive (the “app data folder”). Book Please can see only the files it puts there; it cannot see anything else in your Drive.
Your library
Your books and everything about them (statuses, ratings, reviews, notes, tags, reading dates, progress and listening positions), and any EPUB and audiobook files you add, are stored on your device and in Book Please’s folder in your Google Drive, so they appear on every device you sign in on. They are not stored on our servers.
On the website, to keep you signed in, our server keeps a Google sign-in token for your browser, encrypted. It is used only to give your browser new access to your Google account and Book Please’s Drive folder, and it is deleted when you sign out or delete your account.
Friends (optional)
If you turn on Friends, our server stores your name, email address and profile picture, who you follow, and the reading activity you choose to share (by default: what you’re reading, finished and want to read, and your ratings; reviews and notes only if you turn them on). People who follow you can see what you share. Other people can find you by your exact email address. Turning Friends off deletes all of this from our server.
Photos of books (Capture)
When you use “Capture from a photo”, the photo is sent through our server to Anthropic, whose Claude AI reads the titles and authors in it. We don’t keep the photo; we only count how many photos you send each day. Anthropic handles it under its commercial terms, under which data sent through its API isn’t used to train its models. Scanning a barcode happens entirely on your device.
Looking up books
To find books, covers, descriptions and prices, the app sends titles, authors and ISBNs to Open Library, Google Books and Hardcover (Hardcover through our server). These services see the search, not who you are, though they may see your device’s internet address. Links to stores such as Amazon open their websites, where their own privacy policies apply.
Hosting
The website and our server run on Cloudflare, which processes requests (including your internet address) to deliver them and may keep short-term logs for security. We don’t use advertising, tracking cookies or third-party analytics. The only cookies we set are for signing in on the website.
Sharing
We don’t sell or rent your information, and we share it only with the services named above, to do what you asked, or if the law requires it.
Keeping and deleting your information
Your library stays in your Google Drive until you delete it. Friends data stays until you turn Friends off or delete your account. Website sign-ins end when you sign out, or after 400 days unused. You can delete your account and all of its data at any time: how to delete your account.
Children
Book Please isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update it here and change the date at the top. For important changes, we’ll also tell you in the app.
